Interpreting Emotions through Images

Luokka-asteet: 1.-2., 1.-3.
Oppiaineet: katsomusaineet, kuvataide, äidinkieli ja kirjallisuus
Tuotetyyppi: Tehtävät

Objectives

  • To practise visual literacy, interpretation of images and verbalisation of your thoughts and emotions with the help of pictures.
  • To practise the discussion, listening and interaction skills.
  • To learn about children's rights.

Instructions

1. Learn about children's rights.

2. Divide the pupils into small groups or pairs so that everyone can see the pictures used in the exercise during the discussion (the pictures are at the bottom of the page under the exercise instructions). You can also look at the pictures together first.

3. Instruct the pupils to talk about the rights of children and the things needed for a good life with the help of pictures of Moominvalley. The discussion questions can be given to the small groups and pairs or read out one at a time. You should reserve a bit of time to discuss each question before moving on to the next one. Each pupil chooses an image for each question that, in their opinion, best answers it.

Before the discussion, remind yourselves that the Convention on the Rights of the Child includes the right of every child to express their opinion, as long as it does not violate the rights of others (Article 13).

You can talk about the questions together by choosing an appropriate picture for a question and discussing the choice and the reasons behind it:

Choose an image that best describes...

  • ...what you are dreaming about today.
  • ...what makes learning easier.
  • ...what you are grateful for.
  • ...what you think about friendships.
  • ...what was the last thing that upset you.
  • ...what frightens you.
  • ...what makes you happy.
  • ...what inspires you.
  • ...what makes you feel safe.

Continue to look at the pictures in connection to children's rights. Which of the images best illustrates…

  • …a child's right to attend school.
  • …a child's right to express their opinion, provided that it does not violate the rights of others.
  • …a child's right to rest and play.
  • …a child's right to live as healthy as possible and receive care, if necessary.
  • …a child's right to receive information.
  • …the fact that it is up to adults to fulfil children's rights.
  • ...the fact that children's rights apply to all children.
