Joys and Benefits of Reading
Objectives
- To practise visual literacy, interpretation of images and verbalisation of your thoughts and emotions with the help of pictures.
- To practise the discussion, listening and interaction skills.
- To learn about children's rights and how they affect the formation of a good life.
- To realise how reading and writing skills promote the formation of a good life.
Instructions
1. Discuss briefly: What happy and nice things are connected to literacy and reading? What about the benefits of literacy and reading? You can list your ideas and thoughts on the board in words or pictures.
2. Learn about children's rights. The Convention on the Rights of the Child lists the rights that apply to all the children in the world. Their purpose is to guarantee that all children have the things that are necessary for a good life. Add more joys and benefits of reading on your list based on children's rights. What new joys and benefits connected to reading can you find in the rights of the child?
3. Look at the pictures of Moominvalley. Discuss the images with the help of the following questions:
- What joys connected to reading can you see in the pictures? For example, reading together, calming down through reading, reading out loud to others and listening to a story. What other joys of reading can you see in the pictures?
- What benefits of reading and writing skills can you see in the pictures? For example, learning a new skill, enjoying reading or expressing personal opinion. What other benefits of reading can you see in the pictures?
- Which rights of the child can you find in the pictures?
4. One of the joys and benefits of reading is that reading can teach compassion. Discuss together why that is. Compassion skills include abilities such as stepping into someone else's shoes, understanding another's point of view, being happy for others, and respecting ourselves, others and nature. Why and how can reading help us learn compassion? In what type of situations can compassion skills be useful?
